The Most Common Chimney Repairs
Chimney maintenance and proper care is an important part of being a homeowner. If you have a fireplace and chimney in your home, then you need to make sure it is looked after to ensure maximum efficiency and safety.
Unfortunately, many homeowners ignore the signs of chimney problems, meaning they have to spend more money on larger repair works down the line and some will even require a complete chimney replacement.
After nearly 40 years of experience, the team here at S.H.L Chimney Specialists have seen thousands of chimneys in various states of disrepair. Some problems and repairs are much more common than others.
Chimney Lining Repairs
The chimney liner, or flue liner as it is also called, is one of the most integral parts of the chimney. The liner is responsible for moving heat and gases up the chimney and out of your home. It is also the main proponent of the chimney that protects against chimney fires by protecting the flammable parts of your house from heat and corrosion. It also minimises the risk of the masonry or brickwork crumbling and cracking.
Cap and Crown Repairs
The crown and the cap are the parts of the chimneys first line of defence against the weather and also the parts that are the most susceptible to damage. The most common problems we see with caps and crowns is cracking. If you have a cracked crown or cap, water can easily enter the chimney system damaging the chimney lining and masonry as well as surrounding structures like the ceiling and walls. That's why it is best to repair and cap and crown problems early on as this will help you avoid larger, more costly building repairs.
Creosote build up is the most common type of chimney blockage. However, blockages can also be caused by animal nests and debris like leaves entering the chimney flue. A chimney blockage can be extremely dangerous as is can lead to a build up of carbon monoxide. Carbon Monoxide poisoning can be lethal. The best way to avoid blockages, and carbon monoxide, is to have your chimney cleaned regularly by a professional chimney sweep.
Leaking Flashing Repairs
The chimney flashing is the waterproof seal that is placed where the chimney meets the roof and is usually made of lead, steel, vinyl or aluminium. Its purpose is to prevent water and moisture from penetrating the chimney and the roof at the join. Any damage to your flashing will cause structural problems within your chimney. As the water leaks into the chimney it will cause major issues with your masonry and brickwork, and may even spread to other parts of your home like your roof or attic.
